October 2025 Early Retirement Update – Fall Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! We are back home in Raleigh after spending most of the month on a cruise through the Panama Canal. As a result this monthly update is almost a month late. Better late than never, I suppose.

After being very busy traveling throughout 2025, we are finally home for a long period of time. So far, we have nothing planned for more than two months. The plan is to stick around Raleigh during Thanksgiving and Christmas to celebrate with our extended families. I’m also hoping to work on a few deferred maintenance projects around the house. Never fear, I also have a list of fun “deferred hobbies” that I have neglected for much of the past year.

Our older two kids are busy with their full time jobs while our son is almost half way through his last year of middle school. Since we are home for two months straight, we’ll have a lot more time to spend with the kids as well.

On to our financial progress. October was another great month for our finances. Our net worth increased by $23,000 to end the month at $3,850,000. Our October income of $3,943 was way more than enough to cover our spending of $2,003 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

September 2025 Early Retirement Update – Baltic Cruise Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! After a two week cruise exploring the Baltic Capitals in Europe, we’ll have almost a whole month in Raleigh before our next big trip.

During September, we spent the first couple of weeks prepping for our cruise. It took a lot of time to research the eight different cities we visited around the Baltic sea. We visited Oslo in Norway, Aarhus and Copenhagen in Denmark, Stockholm in Sweden, Kiel and Rostock in Germany, Tallinn in Estonia, and Helsinki in Finland.

As always, the visit to each port was way too short but what a fascinating trip it was! We visited five new-to-us countries. Each day, we were able to maximize our limited time to explore as much as possible. The fact that our floating hotel followed us from country to country made the rapid-fire journey much smoother.

On to our financial progress. September was another great month for our finances. Our net worth increased by $67,000 to end the month at $3,827,000. Our September income of $12,046 was way more than enough to cover our spending of $2,694 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

August 2025 Early Retirement Update – Back to School Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! We’ve been back at home in Raleigh for a couple of weeks after spending most of August on two different cruises. We’ve had plenty of time to rest and recuperate before our next big adventure that commences in a few more days. Soon we cross the pond for another two week cruise around Europe.

A bit of family news – after graduating college, our middle child accepted a full time job offer last month. She is scheduled to start next week. Another worker to keep the economy booming and another taxpayer to keep the government revenues flowing!

On to our financial progress. August was an incredible month for our finances. Our net worth increased by $122,000 to end the month at $3,760,000. Our August income of $1,862 was almost enough to cover our spending of $2,452 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

July 2025 Early Retirement Update – British Isles Cruise Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! I’m back home in Raleigh for a few days between trips so I’ll give an update on what we’re up to.

We just returned from Europe where we spent two and a half weeks in late July and early August cruising around the British Isles, Ireland, Isle of Man, and northern Europe. We also had a full day in London before our cruise to explore the city.

The itinerary for our July/August cruise had some overlap with our June British Isles cruise however we still made it to many new ports of call this time around. The weather was also much nicer in July and August.

In the next couple of days we hit the road (skies? waves?) again for a week-long Caribbean cruise with two of our kids. Our middle child just graduated college and doesn’t have a job yet, so we’re squeezing in a short family vacation with her before she gets busy with work. When we return to Raleigh, it’s back to school for our son who will begin his last year of middle school.

On to our financial progress. July was a great month for our finances in every regard. Our net worth increased by $41,000 to end the month at $3,638,000. Our July income of $7,163 was way more than enough to cover our spending of $1,992 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

May and June 2025 Early Retirement Update – Busy Travel Season Edition!

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! This is a bonus edition covering the last TWO months. Many readers reached out to me to find out where the May update went. The truth is I was way too busy with a series of back to back to back cruises around the world. I only had a few days in Raleigh between each cruise, so I had to focus on other things while in town.

In May we flew to the west coast and took an 11 night cruise to Alaska. After that, we flew home for a few days. At the very end of May we flew to London to start our two week cruise around the British Isles and Europe.

Once home in Raleigh again, we set out on a week-long cruise around the Caribbean with two of our children. One of our kids graduated college in May. She started her new full time job at the very end of June, so we squeezed in one last family vacation before the “fun” of a career starts for her.

Right now we’re enjoying almost a month at home in Raleigh before we head back to Europe for another two week cruise and a bit of London explorations.

On to our financial progress. May and June were excellent for our finances! I should travel and ignore my finances for two months at a time more often because it seems to be working well. Since April, our net worth increased by a whopping $246,000 to end the month of June at $3,597,000. Our combined May and June income of $17,628 was way more than enough to cover our spending of $8,193 for the two month period.

Let’s jump into the details from the last two months.

April 2025 Early Retirement Update – Springtime Animals Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! We spent most of April at home enjoying the springtime flora and fauna. But we also managed to squeeze in a week in the Caribbean on board the Holland America Rotterdam cruise ship.

Right now we are just a few days away from commencing a six week period of busy travel that brings us to the west coast of the USA, then Alaska, Europe, and at the end of June, back to the Caribbean. We’ll be back home for a few days here and there but mostly on the road during that timeframe.

I’ve spent a big part of April taking care of “business” at home. Working on financial planning and filing taxes, tackling some chores and repairs around the house, and visiting with family and friends. Since we’re doing a lot of traveling, I’ve been doing a lot of research and travel planning as well. I’m basically a part-time travel agent these days (with a customer base of one very demanding client – me!).

On to our financial progress. April was a decent month for our finances overall. Our net worth increased very slightly by $4,000 to end the month at $3,351,000. Our April income of $3,581 was almost enough to cover our spending of $4,261 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

March 2025 Early Retirement Update – Vacation Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! We have enjoyed almost a full month back at home in Raleigh since our last vacation but we’re about to hit the high seas again in a couple of days.

We also managed to take a short mini-vacation in the middle of March with all of our kids. Our family visited the Outer Banks of North Carolina for two days during a nice and warm weekend.

Overall, March was a busy month for me between preparing my own taxes and planning a bunch of trips throughout the summer and fall. Hopefully April will bring a slower pace of life since I don’t think I’ll have as many “chores” to take care of.

On to our financial progress. March was a good month for our finances overall. Our net worth declined slightly by $14,000 to end the month at $3,347,000. Our March income of $13,401 was more than six times higher than our spending of $2,136 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

February 2025 Early Retirement Update – Springtime Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! This month’s update is a little later than usual since I’ve been on vacation during the first part of March. We got home a few days ago and I’m finally catching up on things around the house.

Our last cruise was actually two week-long cruises back to back on the MSC Seascape sailing out of Miami. We had perfect weather that let us explore some new islands or new parts of the islands we’ve already been to in the past.

Now we get to enjoy almost a month at home before our next Caribbean cruise in April. But before that cruise we have a short two day North Carolina beach getaway coming up soon.

My plans for our month at home are to finish my taxes, catch up on some reading, and set the hammocks up in the yard to enjoy the spring weather that’s finally here.

On to our financial progress. February was a great month for our finances all around. Our net worth climbed by $39,000 to end the month at $3,361,000. Our February income of $4,844 was almost double our spending of $2,462 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

January 2025 Early Retirement Update – Winter Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! The new year is in full swing and off to a good start so far. We just got home from an 11 night cruise to Mexico out of San Francisco. And in two weeks we will set sail again for two weeks in the warm Caribbean waters.

While I’m at home for a few weeks at a time, it’s always a scramble to take care of chores around the house, take care of some car maintenance, and keep an eye on my financials. It’s not all productivity – we’re also busy spending time with our kids and visiting with family and friends.

So far we’ve managed to dodge the worst of winter by escaping to warmer climates. And now that it’s mid-February, winter is slowly withering away and it’s getting nicer and warmer outdoors here in North Carolina. By the time we get home from our next cruise, spring might be in full swing!

On to our financial progress. January was a great month for our finances. Our net worth climbed by $89,000 to end the month at $3,322,000. Our January income of $4,117 was just a bit lower than our spending of $5,091 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.

December 2024 Early Retirement Update – Year End Edition

Welcome back to another monthly update from Root of Good! Christmas and New Years celebrations are drifting away in the rearview mirror as we round the corner into 2025. We’ve enjoyed the winter holidays being at home with the really cold weather holding off until this week.

Next weekend, we set out for another cruise for the remainder of January. We’ll be visiting several new ports along the way so it’s going to be a nice change of scenery compared to our normal Caribbean cruises.

While at home this winter, I’ve tackled several small home maintenance tasks, read a few books, and caught up on my sorely neglected Netflix queue. You really have to stay focused if you’re going to make any progress on these important tasks.

On to our financial progress. December was a mixed month for our finances. Our net worth crashed by $144,000 to end the month at $3,233,000. On the other hand, our December income of $33,691 was substantially higher than our modest spending of $2,101 for the month.

Let’s jump into the details from last month.
